The Outdoor Classroom

Hank Gruner of the Connecticut Science Center instructs a class of fourth graders at one of the Discovery Zone's active vernal pools.

Following the Town of Monroe's purchase of this 170-acre parcel of land as permanent open space, oversight was given to the Monroe Conservation Commission. Their vision created an outdoor learning center and "living laboratory" to offer Monroe students a distinct advantage through "hands-on" education.
Working closely with Monroe Public Schools, curricula are in development utilizing the Webb Mountain Discovery Zone for field study of science, history, social studies and art from elementary grades through high school.
An outdoor classroom features seating for approximately fifty students.
