"...this was no ordinary forest. This was the Webb Mountain Discovery Zone in Monroe, an outdoor classroom for all ages."
--The Hartford Courant
What is the Webb Mountain Discovery Zone?
What makes the Discovery Zone unique?
An outdoor learning center located on 171 acres providing enrichment opportunities and links to school curricula in the areas of nature, science and history.
Three trails lead you through an intricate outdoor Scavenger Hunt, created by two of the state's leading experts, with 27 learning stations featuring interpretive signs that encourage explorers young and old to find clues and evidence of how the land was used by people and animals past and present.
The interactive Scavenger Hunt (complete with scorecards!) is like an 'I-Spy' game for the outdoors that comes alive to heighten children's awareness and observational skills while having fun. Kids search for frogs and salamanders in vernal pools, charcoal bits and arrowheads in Colonial quarries and Native American sites, look for mammal tracks in a sandpit, and explore "life in a rotten log."
Is the Discovery Zone "just for kids?"
The Discovery Zone appeals to all ages and interests. The easy-to-walk, well-marked trails are great for exercising, dog walking, or enjoying a leisurely stroll in the great outdoors! Stop by for a picnic lunch or spend a few meditative moments in the butterfly garden adjacent to the parking area. Or travel north to the Hay Field on a sunny day with your sketchbook for expansive views of the distant landscape.
How do I get there?
The Discovery Zone is located off Route 111 just north of Masuk High School in Monroe, CT. At the blinking light head east on East Village Road and follow the green signs to the Discovery Zone entrance. The preserve is open to the public sunrise to sunset and is free of charge. Dogs on leashes are welcome but owners must pick up after their dogs.
Organized groups need to contact the Discovery Zone to schedule visits in advance, and program or facility fees may be required. Click on links above for details on scheduling field trips, scout troop visits and birthday parties.
